Munthiri Kothu

South Indian sweets are genuine treats that have a significant and contemporary place for anyone who enjoys sweets. Long hours of preparation and a variety of unique components lead to an interesting final product in terms of flavor. Sweets are prepared in large quantities according to city and district, and loved.

A common sweet that is loved by many is Munthiri Kothu. This sweet treat has Indian origins and is often made in the Kanyakumari district. This Munthiri Kothi is made in the evenings and sold in all of the sweet stores in Thirunelveli and Nagercoil. In Sri Lanka, Munthiri Kothu is also made and consumed under the same name as Payarram Paniyaaram, although with a few modifications.

Ingredients:
  • 1 Cup
    Green Gram
  • 2 Tbsp
    White Sesame Seeds
  • 1/2 Cup
    Grated Coconut
  • 1/2 Cup
    Jaggery
  • 1 Tsp
    Cardamom Powder
  • A Pinch
    Salt
  • 3 to 4 Tbsp
    Ghee
  • 2 Tbsp
    Maida
  • 4 Tbsp
    Rice Flour
  • 1/4
    Tsp
  • For Frying
    Oil
Directions:

    Roast Green Gram in a clay pan for 10 minutes in low flame, then cool it under room temperature and crush into a 95% fine powder.

    Pour ghee into a pan and add grated coconut. Fry until golden brown, then remove from the stove.

    Roast sesame seeds in a pan until they splutter.

    Add jaggery to a pan and pour the necessary amount of water to melt it, then strain the syrup using a strainer.

    Grind the roasted coconut and sesame seeds together into a coarse powder. Add the sesame-coconut combination to the ground green gram powder and mix well. Pour in the filtered sugar syrup, cardamom powder, and salt.

    In this stage, splash water if required and bind the mixture. Roll it into medium-sized balls and set them aside.

    Mix Rice flour, Maida, Cardamom powder, Salt, and Turmeric powder in a mixing bowl. Add water and mix thoroughly to create a thick batter without lumps.

    Dip the rolled balls into this thick batter and drop them to the heated oil. Fry until the batter forms as a thick layer and remove from the oil.
