Bread Upma

“Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dine like a Pauper” is a well-known saying.  However, in our current hectic lifestyle, we all have hectic mornings that leave us out of breath. Other than choosing ready-mix breakfast options, we have several instant breakfast recipes such as Upma, Sevai and many more.

Upma can be prepared in no time when ingredients are kept ready. It is believed to have originated from several regions of Indian Subcontinent and is popularly prepared in parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Srilanka, Gujarat and Maharashtra.  Upma is prepared in a wide range of variations, including rava/sooji upma, vermicelli upma, bread upma, aval upma, and many more.

Ingredients:
  • 8 Slices
    Bread
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp
    Urad Dal
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp
    Gram Dal
  • 12 to 15 No's
    Shallots
  • 6 to 7 No's
    Red Chili
  • A Pinch
    Turmeric powder
  • ¼ Tsp
    Mustard Seeds
  • ¼ Tsp
    Asafoetida
  • As Required
    Curry Leaves
  • As Required
  • 4 to 5 Tbsp
    Gingelly Oil
  • To Taste
    Salt
Directions:

    The first step is to trim the edges of the bread. After cutting the edges, crush the bread to a 60–70% consistency. Crush the remaining thirty percent to a half-size.

    The preparation involves tempering by heating Gingelly Oil in a clay pan, adding Mustard seeds, Gram dal, and Urad dal, and sautéing on low flame.

    When the Urad Dal and Gram Dal are slightly roasted, add Red Chillies, Curry leaves and saute the mixture until the Dals turns golden brown. Add chopped small onions when colour change is notice.

    Saut the onions for just 2 minutes, then add turmeric powder, Asafoetida Powder and give a good mix.

    Pour little amount of water and add required amount of Salt to the mixture and let it to boil for one brief moment.

    Add a handful of coriander leaves and the smashed bread to the prepared mixture immediately. Gently stir in the ingredients and serve hot.
